I will never drive through the mountains during the winter ever again.

I just got back from my Penn State interview, and it went fine. In fact, it was a breeze after driving through the mountains in the dark while it was snowing. Those of you who have driven with me know that I have some grandma-esque tendencies when I drive. I rarely go more than 5 miles per hour over the speed limit, and I tend to give semi trucks a wide berth. I give "defensive driving" a whole new meaning. It's not that I'm nervous all of the time. I just know that I absolutely can't afford any speeding tickets or accidents. I can barely afford gas, for Pete's sake. Anyway, on my way to Pennsylvania, it was white knuckles all the way, especially since I almost got side-swiped by a semi just as I was leaving Ohio. I then watched the guy almost hit a few more people, and drive on the shoulder for a few miles. He was a menace to the roads, and traveled with me for about 150 miles. Fuck Pennsylvania and their mountains with their falling rock signs and narrow tunnels. I'm flying to the rest of my east coast interviews. Call me a wuss if you want to, but I don't want to plummet to my death for the sake of a residency interview.

I watched Grey's Anatomy last night. Part of me feels a little foolish about it. First of all, I can get all of the surgery I want at school. I have been deluged by medicine for the last three and a half years. I'm going to be learning more than I want to know about being a surgery resident in about 7 months. Secondly, this show is about the most inaccurate medical show I have ever watched. I'm not even talking about medical management issues. I can pick those apart ad nauseum and I may or may not be correct. The real issue that drives me nuts is that the surgeons in the show don't seem to practice any particular specialty. Addison Shepherd is an interesting example. Is this woman a neonatologist, an OB/GYN, a neurosurgeon, or what? As far as I can see, she has done it all. Izzy, the blonde one, is being recruited by Addison when she's wearing her OB/GYN hat, but let me tell you, a surgery resident who wants to practice OB can't be a surgery resident anymore. She would have to change programs. The heart guy does plenty of hearts, but I think he also did a liver biopsy on Ellis Grey. I think that would more likely be left up to somebody who operates on the liver more often, or one of the interventional radiology guys, although I will admit I'm not as sure on this one. It's true that in some smaller community hospitals, the role of the general surgeon is much broader. In a rural hospital I worked in as a third year student, the general surgeon in town did all of the c-sections. This isn't something that would happen at (what seems to be) a big academic hospital like the "Sinai Grace" hospital in Grey's Anatomy. Medicine is a special type of field in that there are many rules about things like proper conduct and power within a hospital. There is a social structure that is maybe not so obvious to those on the outside. I'm always thinking about that when I watch the show. However, if I put all of that out of my mind, I really like it, and I look forward to watching it on Sundays. It's a fun drama. I just don't think my life will be like that.

In other news, I now know what chairmen of internal medicine do on their days off. They wear army pants and shop for mystery novels. no joke.
